Alchemy: database management software used for electronic archiving, search and retrieval
Architecture: the design of a computer system
Backfile Conversion: conversion of files and documents that have accumulated over a period of time
Back-up : a copy of data that prevents loss of information in case the original data is damaged or destroyed
Cache: temporary space storage for data that must be accessed quickly
CD-Rom (Compact Disk-Read Only Memory): a version of CD used for the storage of digital data
CMS (Content Management System): refers to the web content management system
DASD (Direct Access Storage Device): a reference to any online data storage device
Database: a logical assembly of images, files, enabling users to browse through information in an assigned logical order
Digitising: the process of converting hard copy into an electronic format
Indexing: assigning identity to documents or files
ECM (Enterprise Content Management): the management of all types of content including business documents, e-mails and electronic transactions
Electronic Document Management System: manages the content of electronic documents
Fabric: hardware connecting workstations and servers to storage devices
Hard Disk: a magnetic disk drive
Near-line: storage classification, enabling fast access to desired information
RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks): information is arranged on a bank of hard disks in such a way, that the failure of one single disk would not lead to a total loss of information
