Overseas Removals Checklist

Planning an overseas removal can go smoothly or it can be the most anxiety-filled time of your life – the difference lies in how well you are organized. One of the best ways to keep on top of things when you are preparing to move from one country to another is to put together a good checklist. Your checklist should include all of the things that must be done before you leave. It should include everything from getting your vaccines to finding the proper sized carrying cage for your pet, if you are taking one with you. As long as you list everything down and check each item off as it gets done, you will be able to stay on top of the myriad little details that are essential to any overseas removal.

Here is a basic checklist to which you can add your own items:

· Find and book international movers.
· Find apartment or house in new country.
· Find out about visa requirements.
· Apply for visa.
· Find out about work permits.
· Apply for work permit.
· Find out about international driver’s licence.
· Apply for international driver’s licence.
· Find out about vaccine requirements.
· Get vaccines if needed.
· Find out about taxation in new country.
· Inform home country tax office about move.
· Arrange for private health insurance.
· Determine whether to send children to an international or local school.
· Enrol children in school.
· Make a list of people and entities that need to be informed about your change of address and then call or write to them.
· Decide on what you will be doing about your banking – whether you will keep an account in your home country or you will be transferring everything to the new one.
· Change your address for each credit card you own.
· Arrange to have your utilities cancelled on moving day.
· Find out the restrictions and quarantines on pets.
· Get documents ready for transporting pets.
· Take an inventory of all your belongings.
· Get rid of superfluous items.
· Pack.
· Determined whether you will be importing vehicle or selling it and buying a new one in new country.
· If selling it, arrange for sale, if importing it, find out about duties and arrange to have it shipped.
· Stock up on any medications you might be taking so that you have enough to cover you until you find a doctor and pharmacy in your new country.
· Get copies of your medical history from your family doctors.
· Create a master packing list of all your belongings.
· Have a list of all your valuables and appliances with a detailed description, serial numbers and even photos if possible, just in case something gets lost or damaged in transit.
· Call to confirm the removal company has your booking at least a week before your move.

The above is a very basic list of all the things that need to be addressed with an overseas removal. As you go along you might realize that you have a specific need that must be added to the list. You can also break the list down further using a timeline so that you leave certain things to a later date and take care of those items that require more time as soon as possible. As long as you have a checklist of what you have to do, your overseas removal will be a success.

I immediately got a call from a moving company who was very professional. We've had good communication, the survey was punctual and they returned a quotation the following day as promised. So far, so good!
